2008 Jack Straw Artist Srivani Jade will discuss and play selections from her Artist Support Program project. Traditional Indian music is inherently creative in nature. The ensemble co-creates the music afresh each time through a process of structured improvisation. The structure comes in the form of a composition, often set to a specific melody (raaga), rhythm (taala) and poetry. Vocals tend to play a prominent role as "keepers of the vision" for the overall piece and guide and shape the music as it progresses.

Srivani Jade is a Hindustani classical singer. She specializes in the classical form of Khayal and other traditional and folk-inspired music from various regions of North India. Srivani has performed regularly on stage, radio and television in India from the age of five and continues to maintain a busy concert schedule here in the USA. Srivani has a Fellowship Award from Washington State Arts Commission this year for her work in maintaining cultural traditions of Indian music in the Pacific Northwest, through teaching and performance.
